You can pump in six puffs of salbutamol (from a metered dose inhaler) into a spacer and ask the patient to breathe using the spacer.
Using a salbutamol metered dose inhaler with a spacer has been shown to be as effective as jet nebuliser therapy. Different treatment regimens can be used, from one puff every five minutes, to six puffs in the spacer at once.
Salbutamol and Terbutaline are short acting beta agonists. They can be given as follows:
Salbutamol: 200-400 μg four-hourly if required
Terbutaline: 250-500 μg four-hourly if required
These drugs can cause tremors and tachycardia in high doses.
